Tuesday – Quiz Night
Big bar tab prizes for the smartest team that make the evening all the more worthwhile. Jake the proprietor runs the gigs and has done a great job of keeping the crowds attention from it’s inception. Grab a sense of humour, get your brain on. It all kicks off at seven.
Wednesday – Pig Wednesday
We are also doing Joker Poker on Wednesday’s, but…have you checked out these ribs? Quite possibly the most delicious ribs this side of the proverbial black stump. These are a must do on your list and on Wednesday they are half price!
Thursday – movie night
We are running movies every second Thursday. From Star Wars to Fifty Shades of Grey, there should be something for everyone. Call us at the bar to see whats on next week!
Friday – Games Night
Come along and try your skills at pool, darts and table tennis. We play a round robin series, so get your game face on, grab a crew and hit the Tavern for a challenging night out.
Saturday – Karaoke
So you think you can sing? Let us be the judge of that. Every Saturday till the end of February, sing your heart out and let the good folks of Russell be the judges.
Sunday – Live music
2:30 – 5:30 Listen to the sweet melodies that can only be sung by Dann. Good honest relaxing music from one very talented man. True Sunday bliss.
6 February - Waitangi Day
Waitangi , being just a short ferry ride away from Russell makes the Tavern a brilliant place to recollect our past. Russell, being the first capital of NZ, makes for a great exploratory day out on our National Day.
Or, just sit in the pub, like the rest of the nation.
14 February - Valentines Day
“Don’t forget, don’t forget, don’t forget, don’t forget, don’t forget, please…”
If you still can, dress to impress as the Duke Tavern is giving away a sizeable bar tab for the best dressed couple on Valentines day this year.
March - Easter fishing comp
“Easter Snapper Surprise Competition” Here’s your opportunity to show off your fishing skills in the Bay of Islands. On the 26th March 2016 and are giving away $70,000 worth of toys, including a brand new boat, with outboard and trailer! You can fish anywhere between 6am and 3pm and the weigh in is at 3pm till 4pm.
$25 secures your spot in the comp.
April - Downhill Derby
Now here’s a good day out with good old fashioned death defying lunacy. This event promises thrills and spills. Grab yourself an old cart, build a new one, or just have a crack in an old converted shopping trolley. Yep – someone did just that. The course is from the crown of Long Beach Rd down the hill to the Baptist Church. It’s quite a run, so look out for speed wobbles. Full details available at The Tavern.
May - Country Rock Festival
May 13, 14 15 The Duke of Marlborough Tavern and other venues plays host to: The Bay of Islands Country Rock Festival which features good music and friendship in the stunning setting of the Bay of Islands of New Zealand – one of the top tourist spots of the country. Each year the festival features more than 50 acts from New Zealand, USA and Australia performing at multiple venues. Yee haw!
July - Russell Birdman
Live bands all weekend and prize giving is all on here at the Tavern. Thursday night darts comp on this year too. For those of you who have not been, this is the funniest thing you will see in your life – or your money back. Russell Birdman is a charitable event that allows scholarships for Northland children.
August - Jazz & Blues
Every year jazz and blues musicians gather from all over New Zealand and overseas for the annual Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival. The seven venues in Paihia, Russell and Haruru Falls host over 150 hours of quality jazz and blues during the three-day event. There are 50 acts featured. Street performances each morning add to the atmosphere of the festival. Admission into the venues will be by badge only unless stated.
21 October - Coastal Classic
Last year was an epic race, challenging at times, but saw most boats arrive in good time, and able to enjoy the magic conditions in Russell, plus enjoy the inevitable post-race festivities. We had a lot of first time entries and the fleet numbers were again up, proving the continuing popularity of this special event.
Oct - Walking Weekend
This is going to be a great week not only for the beauty of the bay but for the cultural and historic elements that are unique to this part of the world. To ensure you get the best out of the walks we have local guides to lead the way. These guides are all passionate and knowledgeable about the area and bring something extra to the walking experience.
1 November - Melbourne Cup
They call it the race that stops the nation. It certainly stops Russell in it’s tracks! It seems the whole town will take the ‘avo off and throw on some glad rags and head to the Tavern to watch the event live on sky.
Most of the town is there, so come and join us all!
December - Santa Parade
Russell Santa Parade arrives courtesy of The Duke of Marlborough Tavern again this year.
As always the focus is on the children and a fun family atmosphere. “Give and let give” is this years theme, with prizes for pretty much everyone who turns up to watch the floats and enjoy a brilliant garden party afterwards on the expansive lawn at the back of the Tavern. Kids of all ages are welcome to our xmas party!
